About
The Manoa Alcohol Project (MAP) began in 2005 under a federal Department of Education grant to address the issue of high risk and underage drinking among freshmen in the residence halls at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). In 2007 the federal grant ended; however, through another grant from Anheuser-Busch the project expanded to include all UHM undergraduates.
Two major objectives of MAP are to present accurate norms about drinking at UHM and to reduce harmful consequences of over-consumption. We know that when it comes to drinking, most UHM students make smart decisions! Part of our job is to get that message out. We recognize the majority of students who are making healthy choices, and help others learn to reduce high-risk drinking.
MAP recognizes that the entire campus and community are crucial to any alcohol prevention program. The MAP Coordinating Committee was formed to provide a forum through which all segments of the campus could collaborate on prevention efforts and provide input into alcohol and other drug policies and programs. Meeting monthly since 2005, the committee includes representatives from the instructional faculty, several student affairs offices, campus security, athletics, and student groups. The committee has initiated a safe ride program, issued policy advisories, coordinated campus events, and assisted with curriculum infusion and educating the campus about brief intervention services for students at risk.
Our objectives are:
- Through targeted campaigns, correct undergraduate student misperceptions of drinking norms (about quantity, frequency, acceptability, use of harm reduction techniques, and alcohol expectancies).
- Help students realize they have control over the choices they make.
- Involve parents in addressing at-risk alcohol consumption.
- Assist in training resident advisors and other Housing staff, as well as other
- campus entities, on harm reduction techniques and referrals for brief intervention.
- Continue coordination and collaboration through the Manoa Alcohol Project Coordinating Committee.
- Evaluate project effectiveness and use feedback to advise future prevention efforts.
