Rules About Drinking On Campus

The University of Hawaii at Manoa has policies that state who, where, and when students and guests can drink on campus.  Drinking under age 21 or purchasing alcohol for someone who is under 21 is against the law.

A Few UHM & Student Housing Policies

  • All students, faculty, staff, and visitors must comply with Hawaii state law.
  • Residents and/or guests of 21 years or older may possess or consume alcoholic beverages within the privacy of their room or apartment, so long as ALL guests and occupants are 21 years of age and older.
  • Common source containers are prohibited on campus, which includes, but are not limited to, the following: kegs, party balls, water jugs, jungle juice, beer bongs, etc.
  • Alcohol is not allowed in common areas.  When transporting alcohol through common areas, the containers must be closed.
  • No smoking is allowed in any resident halls, lanais, or within 20 feet of building entrances, exits, air intake ducts, vents, and windows of buildings that are not air-conditioned.
  • The State of Hawaii`s Social Host Liability Law makes it illegal to host underage drinking in a resident’s residence, and holds adults liable if they provide alcohol to a minor who then injures another person. Resident hosts will be held responsible for distributing alcohol to anyone, resident and/or guest, under the age of 21.

Consequences
Students not in compliance with UHM’s alcohol and other drug policies may be required to complete an alcohol and/or other drug education course, face a negative note on their permanent record, pay a fine, be removed from the residence halls, and/or be suspended or expelled from UHM.
